Early Years Foundation Stage

At Tiffield Academy, we believe every child deserves the very best start to their education. Our ambition in Reception is for all children to feel safe, valued and inspired to learn through meaningful play, exploration and positive relationships. We strive to create a nurturing environment where every child is recognised as a unique individual and supported to develop confidence, independence and a love of learning.

Our Early Years provision is underpinned by the understanding that children learn best when they are actively engaged, curious and emotionally secure. We provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that responds to children’s interests, developmental needs and individual starting points, enabling them to thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

We recognise the importance of communication, wellbeing and relationships in the early years and place these at the heart of our practice. Through high-quality interactions, carefully planned provision and child-centred learning opportunities, we aim to:

  • Develop children’s communication and language skills through rich conversations, storytelling, singing and purposeful interaction.
  • Foster independence, resilience and confidence in both learning and everyday routines.
  • Support children to build positive relationships, manage emotions and develop self-awareness.
  • Provide engaging opportunities for children to explore, investigate, create and problem-solve through play and first-hand experiences.
  • Build strong foundations in early reading, writing and mathematics through practical, multisensory and meaningful learning opportunities.
  • Create a language-rich environment where children feel confident to express themselves, share ideas and develop a lifelong love of learning.
  • Encourage curiosity, creativity and imagination both indoors and outdoors.
  • Prepare children emotionally, socially and academically for the transition into Key Stage 1.

We encourage children to become active learners who play and explore, think critically and develop perseverance through meaningful experiences. Through strong partnerships with parents, carers and professionals, we ensure every child is supported to reach their full potential and make progress from their individual starting points.

At Tiffield Academy, we value the importance of learning through play and exploration. Our indoor and outdoor environments are carefully designed to promote communication, engagement, independence and discovery across all seven areas of learning. We aim for all children to leave Reception as happy, confident and motivated learners who are ready for the transition into Key Stage 1.

We provide our children with opportunities to develop all seven areas of the curriculum through both our indoor and outdoor provision. We want children to feel safe and secure at all times and ensure that safeguarding procedures are rigorous and up to date. Communication is important to us and we greatly value the relationships we build with parents and carers throughout this vital year.

Staff use the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework as a tool to support and monitor the development of each child. The Early Years Foundation Stage covers the three prime areas and four specific areas of learning:

Prime Areas

•              Communication and Language.

•              Physical Development.

•              Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Specific Areas

•              Literacy.

•              Mathematics.

•              Understanding the World.

•              Expressive Arts and Design.

In Reception, our intent is implemented through the following aims.

  • To provide a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where children feel happy, secure and valued as individuals.
  • To deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum through meaningful, engaging and play-based learning experiences that meet the needs of all learners.
  • To create a balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning opportunities which encourage curiosity, independence, creativity and exploration.
  • To develop children’s communication and language skills through high-quality interactions, storytelling, singing, role play and purposeful conversation within a language-rich environment.
  • To support early reading, writing and mathematical development through practical, multisensory and hands-on experiences that are meaningful to the children.
  • To provide opportunities for children to develop their personal, social and emotional wellbeing, including confidence, resilience, self-regulation and positive relationships.
  • To promote active learning through a stimulating indoor and outdoor environment that encourages investigation, exploration and problem-solving.
  • To use a range of teaching approaches, sensory experiences, visual supports and structured routines to support engagement and deepen understanding for all learners.
  • To encourage independence and life skills through daily routines, continuous provision, self-care opportunities and real-life experiences.
  • To work in partnership with parents, carers and other professionals to ensure every child is supported, celebrated and able to achieve their full potential.

Our Early Years provision is adapted to meet the diverse needs of our learners through personalised learning pathways, targeted support and responsive planning. Learning opportunities are carefully planned around children’s interests, developmental stages and individual next steps to ensure high levels of engagement and progress.

Children access a rich indoor and outdoor learning environment where communication, curiosity and exploration are at the heart of learning. Staff continually observe, model and interact with children to extend thinking, develop language and promote deeper learning through play. Provision is regularly reviewed and adapted to provide challenge, promote independence and meet the changing needs of the children.

Early reading, communication and vocabulary development are prioritised throughout the environment and daily practice. Opportunities for mark making, fine motor development, counting, problem-solving and imaginative play are embedded across continuous provision and thematic learning. High-quality texts, songs, stories and real-life experiences support children to develop knowledge, understanding and a love of learning.

Children are encouraged to revisit and practise skills regularly to build confidence, resilience and independence. Learning is supported through visual prompts, modelling, structured routines and sensory approaches where appropriate. Staff use ongoing observations and assessment to identify next steps and celebrate progress from each child’s individual starting point.

Through our nurturing, personalised and play-based approach, children in Reception will develop into happy, confident and independent learners who feel safe, valued and ready for the next stage of their education.

Children will acquire strong communication and social skills, enabling them to express themselves, build positive relationships and engage successfully with the world around them. They will demonstrate curiosity, creativity and resilience.

Our children will make progress from their individual starting points and develop the emotional wellbeing, independence and learning behaviours needed to thrive in Key Stage 1 and beyond. They will leave Reception with strong foundations in Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Interaction, and Physical Development, alongside a love of learning, confidence in themselves and a willingness to explore new experiences.

At Tiffield Academy, we aim for every child to leave the Early Years as a motivated, capable and enthusiastic learner who is prepared for future success both within school and in everyday life.
